About Dr. Matthew Bui

urban data, tech, & policy researcher // examining the intersections of digital, data, and racial justice

Dr. Matthew Bui is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Information, director of the Race and Data (RAD) Justice Lab, and co-director of the Urban Tech Collective. He is also a research affiliate with the NYU Center for Critical Race and Digital Studies (CR+DS) and UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry (C2i2). Previously, he was a Research Fellow at UMSI and Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the NYU Alliance for Public Interest Technology.

Bui’s research foregrounds the local and racial politics of data-driven technologies, policy, and platforms, in order to identify and explore community-driven interventions for outcomes of social and racial justice. His current book project, Appetite for Data, explores how digital foodie platforms increasingly mediate important community debates about race, class, gentrification, and cultural and neighborhood “authenticity” while also reimagining digital platforms for racial and class solidarity.

Bui graduated from the University of Southern California with a PhD in Communication from the Annenberg School for Communication and Graduate Certificate in GIS from the Spatial Sciences Institute. Prior to his doctorate, he received his MSc in Media and Communication (Research) from the London School of Economics and graduated from UCLA with honors (BA, Communication). He worked in non-profit and technology marketing before pursuing graduate school.

The son of Vietnamese refugees and product of a heavily Latinx-Asian immigrant community, Dr. Bui strives to give back to his communities through actionable—and community-minded—research and advocacy.
